AED Iota Chapter – Texas A & M University

Goals

The Society aims to "encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship; to stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education; to promote communication between medical and premedical students and educators; to provide a forum for students with common interests; and to use its resources to benefit health organizations, charities and the community." (From National Website)

In the Iota chapter we strive to accomplish the national goals while at the same time focusing on maintaining a small, closely knit organization of exceptional students. To this end, our minimum GPA entry requirement (3.4) is higher than the national requirement (3.0).

History

Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) is a national honor society for students preparing for careers in human medicine, dental medicine, osteopathic medicine, veterinary medicine, and other allied health professions. It is the world's largest Honor Society that exclusively serves premedical students, with more than 135,000 members in 177 chapters. It was organized at the University of Alabama on April 28, 1926.

In Texas the University of Texas was the first to organize with its Alpha chapter being organized in 1928 (one of the first in the nation). There are now chapters at the UT, Baylor, Texas Tech, UH, Houston Baptist, TCU, UTEP, UNT, TAMU, SMU, UTSA, Trinity, and UTD. For more information on Texas AED chapters, click here

The Iota Chapter of AED was organized at Texas A & M University on April 24, 1987. In early 2003, the Iota Chapter introduced as Co-advisors Mr. Filomeno Maldonado and Ms. Wanda Watson from the Texas A&M College of Medicine.

Iota chapter has made significant contributions to the premedical life at TAMU. In the spring of 1991 Texas Iota organized the first health career symposium held on campus. Since the initial event, the Office of Professional School Advising has assumed responsibility. The Chapter plays an active roll in the symposium and other campus-wide pre-health activities through the Executive Council of Health Organizations (ECHO) and its members volunteer in hosting representatives from medical schools, preparing and disseminating information, and ushering at the symposium.

Texas Iota has biweekly meetings, usually on Thursdays, with speakers representing various facets of the medical community. Topics range from bioethics to rural health working conditions. For a complete list of recent speakers and topics, click here
